As a teenager I once asked my Mother what her greatest Mother's Day gift was, I was shocked when she said a large handmade card from my brother, sister, and I that held a packet of pictures that my Dad had taken us to have done at Olan Mills. I couldn't believe that she didn't say the "My Pet Monster" that my brother and I had so carefully selected for her (mostly because we wanted it) or the beautiful flowers and jewelry that my dad showered her with every year. Pictures and a handmade card that was her greatest gift? Seriously?
I didn't understand the importance of photographs until after I graduated high school. I took pictures often but never really valued those moments until our family experienced a tragic fire that destroyed a large portion of our family photos. I still think about the pictures that I used to get out and look through. My mom had a album dedicated to each one of us kids and we used to look through them weekly. It was full of great moments. I wish we still had those books, it gets harder and harder to recall those moments as I get older. I've lost many details of those photographs over the years ... was I wearing shoes? what was I covered in? Which of my 30 cousins was licking my cheek?... You know what I mean the important details that define moments in our life. Those details are one of the reasons we take pictures to document those wonderful moments we experience so we won't forget them.
Now that I'm a mother of 4 I can honestly say that I totally understand what she meant. Mother's day to me is not about presents it's about cherishing the blessing I have already received. I could care less if I get flowers or presents or any other gift. I just want to spend it with the special little people in my life. Those handmade cards and photographs are worth 100 times their weight in gold but In my opinion time spent with my Children is the greatest gift of all.
One of my absolute favorite things to photograph are Mothers with their children or as they await the arrival of their precious little miracle. There is a love like no other between a Mother and a Child and I love experiencing it first hand and capturing it to last a life time! It is one of the most beautiful things this side of heaven. Today I decided to share a few of my favorite Mommy and Me Photographs I have taken over the last year.
